I had the opportunity to go with My Sissy and my niece (aka Mini Me) to my niece’s first “cattle call” audition Thursday and it was a blog-worthy experience for sure.

The show is X Factor and there were literally thousands of people from all over the country auditioning in Dallas. This was my first experience with a situation like this and I was not impressed with the lack of organization on the show’s part. It seemed like they didn’t properly anticipate the amount of hopefuls and nothing went as smoothly as it could have throughout the day. Still tho, it was fascinating…

They got all registered on Wednesday morning and brought me a copy of the image release, I’ve never seen such a thorough document in all my life. It actually said they have the right to use any image they got of me throughout the universe and for eternity…I could not make this stuff up. I signed it even though I’m not thrilled by the thought of images of me running around without my control but I had to go support the Mini Me. :)

We got up at 4 am (omg how is that possibly the beginning and not the end of my day?) and caught the 5:15 train to the convention center. Thanks to my awesome neighbor for that brilliant idea because the train drops off inside the convention center and we didn’t have to deal with (or pay for) parking. We arrived at 5:30 and the epic waiting began, corralled into the Blue 2 section.

We found a lady who had brought her guitar (even though the instructions said not to bring instruments) and she had a small group around her that were hanging out and singing and having fun. Obviously we gravitated to the fun. The group was about 10 of us who all ended up hanging out for the 6 hours we were stuck in the parking lot. We got to be friendly, got to exchange stories with each other, and built a basic camaraderie during that time. I’m pretty sure Mini Me traded Facebook info with some of them so hopefully we can keep up with them and how they progress in their careers and with the show.

The crowd was the most interesting thing. The fashion ranged from classy to klassy and even included some people who could have been contestants on Let’s Make a Deal. I swear some of these people did not have mirrors in their homes or any friends or family, otherwise they would not have left the house looking like they did. Yikes! We had too much fun being the fashion police.

They moved us to the tunnel outside the convention center and then left us sitting there for another 2 hours before they finally let us into the building. I’m thankful we were in the shade though; you should have seen the sunburns the people got who were left out in the parking lot, poor things! Once we got into the building we finally had a place to sit down (other than on the ground) and wow what a complete and total relief. We made more friends around us once we got inside because we got stuck there for an additional 5 hours before they finally called her into the last line to get in front of the first-round judges.

Through the whole day people would just spontaneously burst into song and most of the time it was a happy pleasing noise, however, there were others that made you wonder what they were doing there. I gotta say, some of these people made me feel better about my own singing voice…which is hilarious and sad all at the same time. Our seats had a great view of the lines to the curtained “rooms” that had judges in them and we got an interesting fashion parade and got serenaded with some super loud singing during our wait.

Once they called Mini Me to the final line, My Sissy went with her and I adjourned outside where I ran into a friend who was also there auditioning and we talked and passed the time. Mini Me wanted to go in alone so My Sissy stepped away during her audition. Mini Me did well enough that even though the judge didn’t choose her, she did tell her that she’s young and they would be back in a few months and she should try again. We’re all encouraged by this because the judge told several people “No, just no.” while they were waiting.

Mini Me was understandably disappointed but to me, this was her first audition outside of school and I really didn’t expect much other than experience for her. She was a trooper, she stood most of the day while My Sissy and I sat on the ground so as not to mess up her dress. She didn’t sing with the other people much to save her voice for the judges, and even laughed at the people who were just belting it out and said they should blow out their voices to give her a better chance. She didn’t get all weepy when she didn’t make it, she sucked it up like a pro. And I think this experience has made her even more determined to make something happen with her singing career and that’s worth a million bucks right there.

A couple of people we made friends with made it to round two auditions and I’ll be curious to see what happens with them. We met some amazingly talented people during the day.

My function at the event was simple, observe the crowd, and take mental notes for the next time we do something like this. I also got to be cheerleader after the bad news was given and I am the ninja at that. Before we got in the car, Mini Me was laughing and we were all talking about strategies for the next audition.

She’s a very brave girl for even having the courage to do the audition; it’s something I’m not sure I would do no matter what the audition was for. However, I remember as a kid wanting to be famous and it seems she has that same ambition. I’m going to help her out however I can to make sure that happens for her. I’m the proudest auntie EVER and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her! Go Mini Me!!

My Asian Adventure - Part Twelve, 80s-o-rama

Okay yes, I realize I'm not in the Philippines anymore but I ran across this post that I wrote while I was there and thought I might as well post it anyway. Hope y'all enjoy!

Here locally, it’s very clear that the 80s came here to die. It’s so strange to me to hear Air Supply, Asia, and Journey on the radio on a regular basis. Okay, seriously, am I in a time warp? The strangest thing is that they don’t play any of the really good music that came out of the 80s (there was a ton), they only play the really sappy love songs. And it’s not on the oldies station, it’s on the popular station, mixed in with hip hop, dance, native pop music, and a Xmas carol thrown in every now and then for variety. So very strange, this soundtrack…

A couple of weeks ago, Eric and I were sitting in a bar having lunch and the parallels between now and our time in Cali together (sans romance, of course) were notable. We’re on an adventure together in a strange place where Madonna plays over the loudspeakers. I had to have a good long giggle at the thought of it. Thankfully we both have much better haircuts these days. ;-)

The fashion is all straight up 80s although I’m happy to report the ridiculously large shoulder pads are *not* present and accounted for. Gods, I hated that style, it made me look like a linebacker. Lol! Off-the-shoulder stuff and shirts long enough to belt are definitely in every store here. I’m sad to report I have seen no paisley, however, I would *rock* that style again. There’s almost nothing for sale that doesn’t have some sort of pattern printed on it and they love some bright colors so the stores are a little visually overwhelming. Add the Christmas soundtrack and decorations to the mix, and a buncha short native folks and it becomes very clear that I’m not in Kansas anymore!

Speaking of the malls, it’s interesting to me to see the differences in fashion between here and home. The flip flop section is quite impressive; it’s actually rows and rows of a wide variety of styles and prices. It’s a myriad of colors and patterns, and they’re all flip flops. Then there are more of the higher quality (leather and 1”heel) styles mixed in with the regular shoe section. It’s the land of painted toenails out here. :)

The pricing on things is *so* cheap but the bad news is that the quality matches the price. I’ve never seen things fall apart so quickly and easily as the stuff I’ve bought here. Seams come undone, things stop working, etc. I joke that we live at the dollar store and it’s really true.

When dealing with the non-corporate vendors, it’s very much a haggle society out here. There’s a non-native price (“gringo price”, as I refer to it) and a local price. This is true for literally everything not bought in a commercial store and it sometimes annoys me, but it is what it is so I’m learning to work with it. I also have my local friends call on things when I’m trying to get pricing so I get the local pricing. My inner jew is hard at work here. :)

My Asian Adventure - Part Eleventy, Religion

The national religion here is Catholicism and oh boy, it shows. There are pregnant women and kids literally everywhere. The religious imagery at the stores is a bit overwhelming and elaborate. Of course, I live in a mainly Hispanic neighborhood back home, so it’s not complete culture shock.

Here’s something strange: every day at 6 pm, there is a moment of prayer. The first time Mike and I witnessed it we were at the grocery store and this disembodied voice came over the loud speaker which caused everyone to literally stop in their tracks. We just looked at each other not really knowing what was going on and if we should keep shopping or what. Total wtf moment. Apparently it happens in all the public areas like stores and malls daily.

The girls in the cafeteria at work listen to Christian radio every morning, so we’ve started joking that we eat breakfast with Jesus. It’s actually quite surreal but sometimes when they’re on the “thought of the day” part there’s a message there for me. Guess it really doesn’t matter what religion you are, the basic tenets are the same: be a good person, try and live a good life, and do it without completely screwing anyone over. I can get on board with that. :)

They do have some beautiful churches here and I got to go to downtown Cebu one day with a local tour guide who was the awesome. I saw the oldest street in the entire Philippines: Colon (pronounced cologne, fyi). I also got to see Magellan’s cross which is located by this amazing cathedral. I want to go back with Eric’s camera because there’s no flash photography inside the church, and my point and shoot just didn’t cut it. I did get some super cool pix of the outside and of Magellan’s cross, tho. :)

Halloween seems to be primarily a kid holiday (much to my extreme disappointment) but omfg the Christmas is already killing me. I’m told the stores started playing the music over the loud speakers at the beginning of September, and there is an amazing variety of it. I’ve heard it remixed with pop songs, and Mike actually purchased that cd because we knew no one would believe it. Hilarious. It totally cracks me up hearing the winter songs about snow and snuggling by fires, because it *never* gets cold here. Oh the irony. LOL!

Since Christmas is my least favorite holiday, it’s like a whole new level of hell to be in the retail areas and have to deal with this. I’m happy to report I’m starting to get used to it and even have a laugh at the crazy decorations here. I’m gonna have to collect pix, it’s so notably foreign and familiar at the same time. This country is so hard for me to understand!

My Asian Adventure - Part Nine, Island Hopping

We chartered a boat and spent a day out on the ocean and wow...it’s breathtaking out here! It’s so beautiful I almost can’t get my head to register that it’s real. I’ve been taking lots of pics but they really don’t do the reality justice. It’s like a movie or a video game or something, heh, Philippines the video game. LOL!

Everything is crazy cheap…we got the boat rental for $50 for the whole day. Six of us went, so we split it and it became ridiculously inexpensive. We made friends with a local who lives near our house and he organized the whole thing for us. Francis is totally the man for that, and we’ll most definitely be using his services again. I’d really like to do this boat thing at least once a month while we’re here.

We got a late start because we went the morning after the Halloween party at the house, that’s also the reason for the small group. The flake factor was high that morning. I wasn’t a hundred percent myself, but there was no way I was gonna miss the adventure.

Everyone but me snorkeled while we were out on the boat and it was hilarious to watch. It looked like a group of dead bodies floating around in the ocean. I think everyone ended up getting burned on their backs as a result, even tho the sunscreen was flowing all day. They said it was amazing to watch the fish and see the coral and stuff but I seriously doubt I’m gonna indulge in the ocean again. The first weekend we were here we did a night swim at one of the resorts, and I got sea urchin spines in my foot that are still working their way out. I’m creeped out by all the critters in the water and since I won’t be able to see without my glasses anyway, I’m opting out until further notice. Thankfully I’m a tanner so just being on the boat and getting sun is totally fun to me.

We went to the strangest “restaurant” for lunch. It was a platform built above the water with tables and a kitchen. The boat pulled up to some stairs(ish) and we climbed up to the place. The food was buckets of live sea critters and you picked out what you wanted to eat from there. Um, okay? I was super grateful they had prawns and were willing to peel and devein them for me so I was able to eat a little lunch. What’s with people eating shrimp here with all the parts still on? Creepy and gross. I’ve never eaten so much rice in all my life. Lol.

All in all it was a successful day, everyone had fun, and I made some new friends. :)

I’m really glad I’m starting to form a social group out here, it makes me far less homesick and gives me alternatives of stuff to do. I’m kinda shying away from the party crowd because I don’t need to drink like a fish the whole time I’m here, tho I am being friendly with them and will still do that from time to time. The alcohol out here is stronger than back home and I think, even tho I drink a lot of water, that I’m probably dehydrated a lot. Drinking out here so far has not been a positive experience because I can’t gauge it like I normally do. I’ve been drinking more at home to try and figure out where my limits are…the last thing I want is to get out and overdo it and be a burden on the group or an embarrassment to myself. I’m *so* not that girl.

My Asian Adventure - Part Seven, Food Issues

Yes, it’s true, I have been mostly starving since I’ve been here...which, with my blood sugar issues, is definitely not a good thing. Let me see if I can explain why.

I have an overdeveloped sense of smell and when things smell bad to me it throws my appetite off. The smells here are very strong and mostly fish-like, whether it’s the local food or the tide being out, it’s all fishy and therefore stomach turning to me. Thankfully the longer I’m here the more I’m getting used to it, so I’m now able to eat in spite of the smells. Also, the local fare has a lot of fish/squid/random sea creatures so it’s like having my nose assaulted at every turn.

The food being mostly Asian of all types (Filipino, Korean, Thai, etc.), it doesn’t sit heavy on you or stay with you. No matter how much rice I eat, I’m having trouble feeling full and when I do feel full I’m hungry again in a few hours. Normally I eat about every 4-5 hours, but here I need to eat every 2-3 and I almost never feel full.

I never realized how much cheese I ate until I moved to the land of no cheese. The cheeses they have available here (unless you go to a specialty store and pay high prices) are cream cheese, American slices, and an inferior version of velveeta that is basically inedible. The cream cheese is exactly what you’d expect, which is thankfully very edible. There is no ranch dressing, although you can buy a thing that’s labeled “ranch” at the store, it is nothing like anything you would actually eat. The mayo is also questionable and I’ve been avoiding it as well.

The meats here are not what I’m used to either. The chicken is *awesome* but they are the thinnest chickens you’ve ever seen and even when you get a whole rotisserie one from the roadside vendor (which are delicious, btw) you get very little meat off of it. The meat on a stick places have things like livers and intestines on the sticks, ugh, gross. The pork is all served with the fat still on it so by the time I trim off the part I will eat, there’s very little food on my plate. There are a lot of sausages which are not my favorite by any stretch of the imagination, and I’ve seen spam quite a bit which is something I’m not willing to eat no matter how hungry I get. I’m not a big fish fan but there is an abundance of it here so it’s very limiting to me. Also, squid and eel are huge here and I’m completely out on those.

I finally found a health food store at the big mall over in Cebu City where I can buy protein bars. Granted they cost about $4 each, but it’s worth it to actually feel full and know that I’m getting enough protein. I’ve been eating a lot of peanuts, cashews, and pistachios lately which are helping with my protein intake also. We do cook at the house which is terrific, but since we usually work 10-hour days, by the time we get home and cook it’s quite late. On those nights we cook, eat, clean up then go to bed. Oh and did I mention that we work 6 days a week? :)

I know it won’t be like this forever and I’ll get to come back to civilization eventually. When I get there, Katie bar the door cuz I’m gonna be an eating fool! I’m drooling just thinking about it...

My Asian Adventure - Part Six, Random Observations

I'm finally back in my body again after finding protein bars at the health food store. Having my blood sugar crashed while adjusting to culture shock and dealing with homesick is definitely not a good thing for me. Wow, crazy Jen BAD! LOL! And now back to the blog...

They have really reliable public transportation here, called Jeepneys. Basically they’re small flatbed trucks that have been modified to have a roof and they pack people in the back like sardines. I swear one day I thought someone was gonna sit in my lap, LOL! It costs pennies to ride them and they have a regular route around the island. There are no regular stops so when you want to get on one, you flag it down and when you want to get off, you tap your change against the roof or make kissy noises so the driver knows to stop. The best part about these vehicles is that they’re all art cars and each one is different. We’ve seen Hello Kitty, Bob Marley, and Pink Floyd just to name a few. I’ll start getting pics of them so you can see how interesting it is.

The water here is not safe to drink, so we only drink bottled water. It’s a huge local industry because even the locals can’t drink the tap water. The stuff that comes out of the tap doesn’t exactly smell rank, but it also doesn’t smell fresh…it has a hint of the ocean which is not my preferred scent. Since it’s what we have to bathe in, most of the beauty products are heavily scented to counteract it. Thankfully it’s a better water smell than the one Jon and I used to get in Washington in the summer…when the water table got low it smelled like rotten eggs. Now that was truly foul! :)

Speaking of bathing, there are no shower curtains here. The bathrooms are designed to get wet and they all have floor drains. We had to get rubber mats to go in front of the toilets because, combined with the humidity, it takes forever for the floors to dry.

More random bathroom observations…they don’t flush the toilet paper here. All the bathrooms have a trash can next to the toilet, omg it’s unbelievable and creepy. Rebels that we are, we don’t practice this at home because it’s just nasty. Most public restrooms don’t have paper in the stalls, there’s usually some in the main part of the restroom that you have to grab before heading into the stall or you’re stuck dripping dry. Also, most of the public restrooms don’t even have seats installed, you’re just supposed to squat over the bowl. My thighs will be amazing by the time I get home, lol! Seriously tho, I’ve gotten really particular about where I’ll go to the bathroom, and when I’m at the mall I’ll buy something at one of the stores so I can use their private restroom. Also, they’re called “Comfort Rooms” here so you have to ask for the CR or no one knows what you’re talking about. :)

Here’s something annoying…much like in Mexico, they use their kids to beg for change. We don’t see it as much locally, but in Cebu City it’s ridonculous. As white people we’re automatic targets, but Eric thought of a brilliant way to get around it. When they walk up and hold out their hand, he holds out his hand and asks them for change. It’s funny and it works every time.

People are incredibly polite here and they address you as “MaamSir” or “SirMaam” depending on your gender. Because everyone uses the public transportation, they have “Courtesy Booths” at the big stores where you can check your bags for free and continue to shop. The customer service in the stores is unparalleled, they have fleets of people just waiting to answer your questions and help you find things. I have to bust out my vocabulary tho because they don’t always know what you’re asking for. Sometimes there’s even a little charades involved, lol. Thankfully I used to do tech support so I know how to use simple words to describe things…

My Asian Adventure - Part Five, Hiccup

I’m truly sorry I haven’t been blogging. I’ve been trying to get situated with work and adjust to the extreme culture shock that is living in a completely foreign country. I feel hungry all the time because the food is so different here that I almost never feel full, which is jacking my blood sugar in a totally unhappy way. I have an overdeveloped sense of smell and omfg there are so many smells out here that are vomitous...I’m working to find a solution to this issue. I’m incredibly homesick which is making my attitude suck and rather than sharing all those feelings, I’ve been trying to keep it to myself. I’m making a valiant effort to adjust and find things to be excited about so I can share again in a positive way. Sorry I’m experiencing technical difficulties but please give me adjustment time and I’ll be back and better than ever soon. Miss you all like crazy. :-(

My Asian Adventure - Part Four, Food

The food here is very hit or miss for me. I’m sort of meh about fish in general, and there’s an awful lot of it. Go figure, we live on an island. Thankfully there’s a lot of chicken, and sometimes pork and beef available, so I’m not completely starving. The chicken is all free range, so it’s much more flavorful than anything we can get in the stores back home. The fruits and veggies are all the freshest *ever* and there are new and unusual things for us to try. So far, we like the local produce a lot. They are crazy for the mango, and there is almost a whole aisle at the store devoted to it.

The snack foods are mostly foreign and the Pringles section at the grocery store had the strangest flavor options I’ve ever seen. Seaweed, prawn, and crab are just a few. Eric says seaweed is good…I’m hesitant but I’ll probably try it eventually and will report back. They have a lot of “cracklins” out here which I can only assume are pork rinds like we have back home.

The Asian food is truly incredible (ya think? lol) and I’ve already experienced the very best Pad Thai I’ve ever had in my mouth. Omg I thought I was gonna die from happy, it was soooo good. We also had Filipino food and I gotta tell you after waiting 20 years to eat lumpia, pancit, and adobo again...my tummy had a serious happy. I hear the Korean food is really good here and I’m looking forward to checking it out. The kim chee from the mini mart by the house that Mike brought home was excellent. Nom nom nom.

As random as this sounds, Italian food, and more specifically pizza, is hugely popular here. There’s actually a whole aisle at the grocery store of nothing but pasta and tomato sauces. We tried some veggie pizza today and it was super thin crust but quite good. I never thought to put artichoke hearts or zucchini on pizza before, but it worked brilliantly. I’m taking notes so I can incorporate ideas into my cooking when I get back.

Another oddity is that burgers are a big deal here. They don’t taste like anything you’ve had before because they use strange spices in the meat patties and the cheese isn’t what you’re used to. Get this, they have this thing called banana catsup here that is apparently sort of sweet and a little more like jelly and less like actual catsup. Mike was so excited to try it when we were at the store that he bought this huge bottle. Now that he’s tried it, he’s jazzed he got the large size.

Speaking of the grocery store, that was a crazy experience. They have the produce prepackaged in plastic so you have to just pick a package and hope for the best. So far, we’ve had excellent luck tho. They have whole fish all laid out on ice and even have whole squid laying there staring at you. Creepy. Mike said there are pig legs in the pork section but I missed them somehow. I was pleasantly surprised at how many familiar products or at least familiar brand names I found although the packaging is much different here. Not a lot of things are in glass, they’re mostly in plastic and pouches. Also, the milk and juices are all in cartons on the unrefrigerated shelves but we’ve tried them now and it’s all good. It seems like a good idea because the milk lives much longer that way, and Eric tells me that’s how they do it in Mexico too.

My Asian Adventure - Part Three, SM Mall

Saturday, Eric took us to the largest mall I’ve ever seen in my whole life. It was four glorious stories of bright and shiny shopping opportunities. We barely got to see any of it, it was just too much for one outing. Because it was the weekend, it was packed, so we got to get an overview of the people on our first day in country. Although they do speak English here, they have their own language (ya think? lol) and it was a sea of short people speaking in a foreign tongue. Wow, just wow, nothing like some culture shock combined with jet lag to completely overwhelm me. LOL! The good news is that I can see forever here because I’m one of the tallest people. :)

We had a list of stuff that we needed to buy, but the first order of business was getting some of our money exchanged. We asked a security guard, who took us to a kiosk where we had to wait a few minutes before the guy took us to another kiosk, where that guy exchanged our money for what Eric said was a good rate. The whole thing felt like some sort of strange drug deal. We’ve since exchanged money a couple more times and it hasn’t seemed nearly as shady as that. They even have a place inside the grocery store where you can get a receipt, so that’s probably going to be my preferred place until my American cash runs out.

They have a whole “cyber” section for the electronics stores and, since we were looking for an internet option for the house, we headed that way. You’d think because they make all the electronics on this side of the world that they would be dirt cheap, but alas that’s not the case. Apparently they ship most of the stuff to America so it’s actually higher priced here. Whoda thunk it? Not me. I will say their electronics come in far more adorable fashion colors here, and I saw a red laptop with the Ferrari symbol on it. Want!

As we walked through the mall, I was eyeing the windows of the stores and found the fashion to be nothing like anything I would ever be caught dead in. Thankfully Eric has a tailor out here because I’m not convinced I’ll be able to buy anything that is cute to me right off the rack. What a huge disappointment. Also disappointing was the home fashion. We were looking for curtains for our rooms to help us feel homier, but it looks like we’ll also be getting those made. Thankfully I did manage to find a furry black throw pillow for my bed that makes me very happy. I’m sure it’s a cultural thing, but clearly there are no goth types in the East…or at least none that I’ve found yet. I’m not giving up.

The noise pollution in the shopping areas is totally ridiculous. The people with the samples and promotions all either have bullhorns or headset mics with sound systems, and they basically blast you as you walk by them. It makes me want to punch someone in the head, but Eric assures me I’ll get used to it. I’m hopeful that’s true for my own peace of mind and everyone’s safety. LOL!

I had heard that karaoke was huge over here but nothing could have prepared me for our experience while we were at the mall. We heard what sounded like bad karaoke so Mike went to investigate. As it turned out, the local pop stars were singing badly over their own tracks (and off key, oh lordy!) and the people were literally running to go catch a glimpse. All four levels of the mall were crowded with people packed at the railings who were so excited this was happening. It was a huge WTF moment.

My Asian Adventure - Part Two, My New Home

We arrived at the airport around midnight on Friday and Eric came to pick us up. It was awesome to see his smiling face and get big hugz, I know he’s been really homesick since his other peeps left. He put me in the back seat of the taxi which, as it turned out, was for my protection. You would absolutely NOT believe how people drive here! The lines on the roads are mere suggestions and they are not afraid to get within inches of other vehicles. The strangest thing is that I’ve been here for several days now, have only seen one wreck, and most of the cars are not dented or scratched up. It must be some sort of magic or something! Really, though, no one talks on the phone or texts while driving, so it’s prolly much safer than back home.

He took us back to the house and, wow, nothing could have really prepared me for the magnitude of it. It’s a three-story with the third story being a rooftop deck with the most *amazing* view of the island. The stairs to the deck are scary because they are huge for no apparent reason and I wonder, if *I* struggle with it, what must it be like for the locals? At least I have the go-go-gadget legs to make the climb. LOL! The second story is Eric’s room and the living area with the tv. Eric has a jetted garden tub in his bathroom and totally gets to win. The ground floor is another living area, dining room and kitchen and the staircase is a sweeping arc...gorgeous. There’s a New Orleans style courtyard but with super cool tropical plants. Can you believe they cut the grass with shears here? I didn't believe it until I saw it. Lil Bro and I each have rooms that don’t actually connect to the main house, but instead have exterior doors onto a tiled hallway that surrounds the courtyard. Our bathroom is the connecting room between our two rooms. On the other side of the courtyard is the servant’s quarters, but we opted out on care and feeding another human, so I haven’t even been in there yet. I understand it has a private bathroom tho, which will be awesome to use when people come visit!

Our neighborhood is one of the upscale guarded kind, which makes me feel safe but giggle at the same time. Since when did I travel to an alternate universe where I can afford to live like this? LOL! Speaking of that, the area is the strangest mix of poverty and luxury. There are tin-roofed shacks right next to brand new construction. Oh, and because of the humidity and bug population the buildings are made of concrete. They make it by hand with dirt and water which looks like a megaton of work but it’s impressive what all they can do with it. Truly there are some beautiful homes here that I will get pics of and post.

As classy as our house is, it’s strange how connected to nature we still are, even indoors. The bedrooms are the only climate-controlled areas so we keep the windows open in the common areas. We do have screens, but it’s not sealed by any stretch of the imagination, so the ants and spiders and geckos just come and go as they please. We keep all our food in sealed containers or the fridge, which is fine, just an adjustment. Speaking of geckos, OMFG, they are adorable and *huge* out here. They make this crazy noise that wakes me up sometimes at night and I’m told the locals play the “he loves me, he loves me not” game with their calls. I pretend that this is some sort of pimp camping trip and my brain accepts the rationalization just fine. ;-)

I think that’s about all the energy I have to write for now because I’m still adjusting to the time change and already working on top of that. I’ll do my best to write more very soon. :)

My Asian Adventure - Part One, Traveling

I’ve decided to revisit my life as a blogger since I now have something interesting to write about…and also so I remember this experience to the fullest. I know I’ll never truly be able to relate how completely foreign this all is no matter how many stories and pix I post, but I’m at least gonna try. :)

Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start… (if you’re singing along in your head, you’re welcome, lol)

Because the guys put the least experienced traveler in charge of the flight arrangements, we ended up having not the 3 hour layover in LA that I wanted, but instead a 15 hour layover. You mean there’s a difference between am and pm? Duh, lol! It actually turned out to be an amazing “mistake” because Andy hooked us up with a totally pimp room in Hollyweird for the night. The building had a French castle thing rocking which made my inner architecture geek SO happy.

Lil Bro and I missed getting dinner because the terminal at D/FW rolled up their sidewalks early, so we had smoothies and vending machine trail mix at the airport and arrived in LA starvin like Marvin. The original plan was to investigate some night life, but our tummys won, so we trekked out in search of food. We attempted to eat at a Hitchcock-themed bar and grill (Jonman, you want to check it out sometime) but found their kitchen closed. Another happy “mistake” because we ate at this super cool retro diner and omg the food, nom! Diner 101 on Franklin, you want…no you *need* to try the brownie waffle sundae. Brilliant!

We stayed up as late as we could to try and help the body clock along and headed to the airport Thursday late morning for the start of the international adventure. I’ve never really understood what the bfd is with asian women, but after seeing the female staff of Asiana Airlines, omfg, message received loud and clear. :)

It became obvious that we are giants in the East almost immediately, Lil Bro kept hitting his head on stuff and I was worried the poor guy was gonna have a head injury by the time we arrived. Let me go on record as saying that I do NOT do well on long, crowded flights and am genuinely concerned I’m going to have to be drugged to the point of comatose to get home from here. They sat us in the center of the center section, the plane was totally full, and there were two babies in the row in front of us…my claustrophobia reared its ugly head in the form of a panic attack within 5 minutes. Thankfully Lil Bro was incredibly patient and kept me from completely freaking and getting off the plane. His rendition of Don’t Worry, Be Happy was classic and I wish I had it to upload to Youtube. 12+ hours and another panic attack later we arrived in Seoul, Korea…I’ve never been so happy to get off a plane in my entire life.

It is Lil Bro’s goal to try the local cuisine wherever we go and also to try foreign versions of the food we know and love, so we headed straight for the food court. Apparently hot dogs are a big deal in Korea, surreal but true, so he got this big nasty chili dog and happily ate it while I watched in abject horror. Doing the cigarette promotions in convenience stores for a year and a half and having to smell the hot dogs cooking all day every day killed what little interest I had in them to begin with. Bleah.

The coolest thing about the Seoul airport was the photo op they had for trying on the traditional costumes. It was free, so yeah, why not? We looked positively ridonkulous and yet hilarious at the same time.

The flight to Cebu was fairly uneventful, which, after my emotional drama during the overseas flight, was a complete blessing to me. :)

Will write more later but at least I have this much to share for now. Soooooo much to tell!

Word gets around and as a result increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar.

A young and dynamic customer service consultant at the local bank recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and increases Heidi's borrowing limit.

He sees no reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the alcoholics as collateral.

At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert bankers transform these customer assets into DRINKBONDS, ALKBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then traded on markets worldwide. No one really understands what these abbreviations mean and how the securities are guaranteed. Nevertheless, as their prices continuously climb, the securities become top-selling items.

One day, although the prices are still climbing, a risk manager (subsequently of course fired due to his negativity) of the bank decides that the time has come to demand payment of the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar.

However they cannot pay back the debts.

Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations and claims bankruptcy.

DRINKBOND and ALKBOND drop in price by 95 %. PUKEBOND performs better, stabilizing in price after dropping by 80 %.

The suppliers of Heidi's bar, having granted her generous payment due dates and having invested in the securities are faced with a new situation. Her wine supplier claims bankruptcy, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor.

The bank is saved by the Government following dramatic round-the-clock consultations by leaders from the governing political parties.

The funds required for this purpose are obtained by a tax levied on the non-drinkers.

The Natural Way To Clean Everything In Your House.

Cleaning Metal Surfaces:

Silver - Put some water in a pan with a few teaspoons of washing soda, bring to a simmer. Throw in alittle piece of aluminum foil, and then dip your silver right into the mix. Pull the item out, dry it off, and shine it clean with a rag.

Pewter - Wash your pewter items in warm soapy water (use biodegradable soap!), rinse, and polish with a clean cotton cloth. Instant clean!

Chrome - You can clean anything that is chrome just by combining 1 tablespoon of ammonia with 1 pint of water. Just rub the concoction on the chrome and watch the dirt come right off.

Iron - If you have iron cooking pans or other items that are looking a little rusty, you can clean them with a damp cloth and some steel wool. Wipe down the item with the cloth, scrub lightly with the steel wool, rinse and then dry. Be sure to rub in a little vegetable oil once it is dry to inhibit any further rusting.

Brass & Copper - By combining a few tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of baking soda, you have a great brass and copper cleaning agent. Just rub in on and then polish it off…so shiny! If your items are heavily soiled, you can soak them in hot vinegar and some table salt. The shine will start showing up on its own, and once you see it, take the item out and rinse it. You can also rub lemon on brass and copper to get into any grooves that need cleaning…just be sure to wipe it off once it is clean.

Remove Candle Wax From The Carpet:

First lay the newspaper down on top of the wax and set an iron to low. Once it has warmed up, start running the iron over the newspaper right on top of the wax. Slowly the wax will start melting and get absorbed into the newspaper, lifting up off the carpet. I had to do this once in my old apartment and it worked like a charm There was a little residue and color left over, but it was way better than the big hard chunks of wax that were on the floor.

To Clean Wood Floors:

Before you work on making the floor sparkle, they should be cleaned with vinegar and water. A small amount of vinegar in a bucket of warm water will do wonders for your wood floor. Make sure your floor is sealed and you wring out excess water before mopping the floors, as too much water could damage your wood. That all being said, once they are clean, you can now work on making them shine:

- If you have natural unsealed wood floors (which you probably don’t), you can use linseed oil with a rag, allow it to soak in for a little while, and then mop it up with a little more oil.

- For sealed floors, you can use 1 part white vinegar to 1 part vegetable oil to give it a great shine. Just combine the two, grab a rag, and rub it in like you are polishing a car. The shine will blow you away.

To Clean Appliances:

Microwaves - Mix 1/2 of water with a few teaspoons of baking soda in a microwave safe bowl. Put the bowl in the microwave and run it for 2 minutes. Take out the bowl and wipe it clean with just a rag; every last spot will come out!

Ovens - You can rub the inside of your oven with wet steel wool to remove the tough stuff, and then sprinkle baking soda throughout the oven. Let it sit for a few minutes, then just wipe it all clean with a wet rag…all done and no caustic chemicals!

Coffee Makers - When the coffee maker is empty, pour in a mixture of 1 cup white vinegar and some hot water to fill up the reservoir to the top. Run the coffee maker like you were making coffee, just without any beans in it. Once the cycle has finished, run it twice more with just plain water, which will rinse out the vinegar and any build up left inside. The coffee will taste better the next time you make a cuppa Joe!

Refrigerators - Baking soda all the way…why would you want to spray chemicals in the giant box that holds your food! Make a nice paste from baking soda and water (equal parts of both) and scrub away. Wipe down with a clean cloth and all will be clean!

Removing Stains:

- On white items, apply white vinegar or lemon juice to the stained area. Allow to soak in to the fabric then wash as normal. The stain should come right out as if it had never been there!

- If you happen to spill wine onto your clothes, grab the salt before doing anything else! Dump some salt on the stained area right away, which absorb a lot of the moisture before it sets. Wash as normal as soon as you can.

- For red wine stains, chocolate or other dark stains that have been there a while, you can try to soak the item in a bowl of glycerine, available from your local grocery or natural store. Soak the clothes for a half an hour and then wash.

- Party guest spills red wine on your nice carpet? Get up as much of it as you can with a wash or dish cloth, then quickly pour white vinegar directly on the spot. Let it soak for a few minutes, then rinse it out with a wet rag. And then berate your party guest!

- If your kids come in covered with grass stains, you can usually get them out by soaking their clothes in either glycerine or or washing soda prior to washing.

To Remove Mold In The Bathroom:

You can use Borax and white vinegar to make a spray that you can aim directly at the mold in the tub or shower. Once you spray it , leave it to sit for 30-60 minutes and then go back in and wipe it off. Presto, the mold will start coming off and you did not have to inhale toxic chemicals to do so. Just mix about 2 ounces of Borax and a cup of white vinegar and you are ready to go. As a back up and a maintenance tip, you can also periodically spray the moldy “areas” with straight vinegar and just let it sit there and soak in. The vinegar will kill the mold that might be growing and it will halt the growth of new mold.

Unclogging Your Showerhead:

Just remove the shower head, find a bowl or cup big enough for it to sit in face down, and fill it with about an inch of vinegar. After letting it sit for an hour or more, remove it from the bowl and run water through it at the sink for a few minutes. Put it back in the shower, and presto, your water pressure is restored.

Removing Rust:

Here is what you need - Salt and lime juice. Yep, that’s it. Already have them in your house? Great, your rust remover is now free. Just sprinkle some salt on the rusty spot and put some of the juice right on top of the salt…but not so much that the salt floats away. You want the mixture to sit right on the rust. Leave it to sit for a few hours and come back with a scrubber and go to work. It won’t take much effort to remove the rust, I promise.

Cleaning the Toilet:

Lemon Juice - I use real lemons by squeezing out the juice. When I am done, I put pieces of the peel down the disposal to clean it out.

OR

Distilled white vinegar - I know you have this already!

And

Borax - Ok, you might not have this one. But it is widely available for a few bucks and its cleaning powers go back years.

You will need to combine the ingredients to make a nice paste in a bowl. Put about 1 cup of Borax and about 1/4-1/2 a cup of either lemon juice or vinegar and it will mix together nicely. All you need to do is spread the paste you just made
into the toilet bowl and let it sit a while. Then come back and scrub it with a scrubbing sponge (we use the washable kind, not the disposable kind) and flush the toilet.

Polish Wood:

The first ingredient is water, of course. Get yourself a spray bottle and put 3 cups of water in there. Once the water is in your sprayer, you will be adding two additional items:

- 4 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar

Add them to the spray bottle and shake the bottle up a little to make everything mix together. That’s it, that is all the wood polish you will ever need. Be sure to test the spray somewhere on the furniture just to make sure you have the mixture right and you will not damage the wood.

Natural Disinfecting:

- You can add 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil to a gallon of water to wash windows, floors and toilets to scrub away the germs.

- To chase away bugs, but a drop of tea tree oil near where they are coming in and you can bet they won’t be coming in that way anymore.

- Lavender oil or tea tree oil can be applied directly to cuts and scrapes where it will cool the pain and help fight infection.

- Mixing a few drops of tea tree oil with some water in a spray bottle can clean mold in the bathroom, disinfect the floor after the dog has an accident, or can clean up after your child has been sick. (or you, after a night like the ones in college)

Clean The Air:

For starters, the easiest way we have found to make things smell better is to use essential oils. In an empty spray bottle I mix water and a bunch of drops from a bottle of essential oils. Done! You can adjust the amount of drops you put in the bottle and of course you can always change the scent any time you want. Right now I have some cranberry scented essential oil in our water bottle…the place smells amazing and it can be sprayed on anything; the couch, the curtains, etc.

- Another thing you can do is to simmer water on the stove in a pot with cinnamon sticks or essential oils in it. However, since this one uses natural gas or electricity, it is not the best choice. Plus, you have to remember to keep your eye on it so it doesn’t burn off and start catching the pot on fire!

- You could also put little boxes of baking soda around the house to absorb any bad odors. We do this for the litterbox. Even though our cat is not exactly a stinker, the baking soda absorbs any strong smells that he might leave behind. This also works great in the refrigerator to absorb the leftover smell from last night’s chili.

- And lastly, you could always get some flowers from your local farmer’s market and put them in vases around your house. The smell of fresh flowers is always a pleasant one and it leaves behind no toxic residue like plug-ins and sprays.

Unclog Your Shower Drain:

Step 1 - Put the DRY baking soda down the drain. I use about 3/4 of a cup.

Step 2 - Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain after the baking soda. Be sure to cover the drain immediately afterwards with a rag or plug, filling the hole completely so nothing can escape. This is because the interaction of the two will cause a “mini volcano” that will want to come up and out of the drain..you want to keep it down there.

Step 3 - Leave this concoction in the drain for about 30 minutes. While you are waiting, boil a tea kettle full of water.

Step 4 - After 30 minutes, remove the plug and slowly pour the HOT water down the drain.

All done! Your drain should flow smoothly now. If not, just do it again. We normally have to do our tub drain often because of the wife’s long hair, but it cleans it out every time.

We have been informed that the College of Bishops of the South Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church has rendered a “legal interpretation” of the action of the Mission Council.

This interpretation affirms that the Mission Council, a body of the South Central Jurisdiction, has the right to approve the lease of the property owned by the South Central Jurisdiction for the building of the George W. Bush library and think tank institute at SMU.

This letter is written to assert our belief that the College of Bishops does not have the authority to make such an interpretation according to the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church.

Division Four, Paragraph 56, Article II, 4. (Page 38) of the Constitution of the United Methodist Church states: “The Judicial Council shall have authority to hear and determine the legality of any action taken therein by any jurisdictional conference board or body”

Since the interpretation of the Mission Council action (a body of the jurisdictional conference), may be appealed by one third of the members of the Jurisdictional Conference (note Par. 56, Article II, 4.), this letter is also to inform you of our intention, as delegates of the South Central Jurisdictional Conference, to offer a motion to the Jurisdictional Conference, meeting in July, 2008, that an appeal for an interpretation be made to the Judicial Council of The United Methodist Church.

We believe that any signed lease between SMU and the George W. Bush Library Foundation substantiated by a violation of the legal processes of The United Methodist Church, (as defined in its Discipline), prior to this Judicial appeal and interpretation, is an ill-advised action that breaches the laws, rules, regulations and tradition of our church.

Write these delegates (or call them) and ask that they not ratify the report for the Jurisdictional Mission Council which includes the Mission Council's approval of SMU leasing part of its property (owned by the South Central Jurisdiction) for the building of the George W. Bush library and partisan institute. The 2004 South Central Jurisdictional Journal says: "The Council shall be subject to the following and specific limitations of authority: All actions taken by The Council shall be valid and in full effect within the South Central Jurisdiction until the next regular session of The(Jurisdictional) Conference.....The chairperson of The Council shall submit to each regular quadrennial meeting of the Conference a written report of all actions taken by The Council during the quadrennium" (p. 101).

This is an actual letter from an Austin woman sent to American company Proctor and Gamble regarding their feminine products. She really gets rolling after the first paragraph... PC Magazine's 2007 editors'choice for best web mail-award-winning letter....

Dear Mr. Thatcher,

I have been a loyal user of your 'Always' maxi pads for over 20 years and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the Leak Guard Core or Dry-Weave absorbency, I'd probably never go horseback riding or salsa dancing, and I'd certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can't tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there's a little F-16 in my pants.

Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? Ever suffered from the curse'? I'm guessing you haven't. Well, my time of the month is starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my body will adjust and I'll be transformed into what my husband likes to call 'an inbred hillbilly with knife skills. Isn't the human body amazing?

As Brand Manager in the Feminine-Hygiene Division, you've no doubt seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your customers monthly visits from 'Aunt Flo'. Therefore, you must know about the bloating, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior.

You surely realize it's a tough time for most women. In fact, only last week, my friend Jennifer fought the violent urge to shove her boyfriend's testicles into a George Foreman Grill just because he told her he thought Grey's Anatomy was written by drunken chimps. Crazy! The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America is just crawling with homicidal maniacs in Capri pants...

Which brings me to the reason for my letter. Last month, while in the throes of cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I opened an Always maxi-pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing, were these words: 'Have a Happy Period.'

Are you fu*ing kidding me? What I mean is, does any part of your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness - actual smiling, laughing happiness is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it, James? FYI, unless you're some kind of sick S&M freak girl, there will never be anything 'happy' about a day in which you have to jack yourself up on Motrin and Kahlua and lock yourself in your house just so you don't march down to the local Walgreen's armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy plan to end your life in a blaze of glory. For the love of God, pull your head out, man! If you just have to Slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn't it make more sense to say something that's actually pertinent, like 'Put down the Hammer' or 'Vehicular Manslaughter is Wrong', or are you just picking on us?

Sir, please inform your Accounting Department that, effective immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I have chosen to take my maxi-pad business elsewhere. And though I will certainly miss your Flex-Wings, I will not for one minute miss your brand of condescending bull sh*t. And that's a promise I will keep. Always.

HOT CHOCOLATE

A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and an assortment of cups - porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said: "Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you're drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each others cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate the gods have provided us. The gods make the hot chocolate, man chooses the cups. The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything that they have. Live simply. Love generously. This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7AM.

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but.... Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give I V fluids at 1 1/2 times maintainance and wat ch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours.

The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine! over 5 ( 1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids. At the point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have continued to incr ease daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220.. He continued to vomit and the owners elected to
euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.

Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is worth passing on to them.

The Bush-appointed FCC just voted to loosen media ownership rules so media titans like Rupert Murdoch can swallow up more local news outlets. She had a big day last Sunday, Zaber and I took her next door to meet her cousins. Gandy was the haver of nothing to do with the kid and hid behind the japanese screen peering at her from underneath. Socks was totally curious and kept following her around but the little one thought she was the baddest mo-fo in the room (she has no idea how little she is) and kept trying to fight. We're going to get them all used to each other so Auntie Zaber can babysit...

Later that evening Lil Bro and I took the kids to the family Xmas event so they could hang out. Sperm Donor and Ms. Thang absolutely doted on the "grandcats" and a good time was had by all.

Gift Card Rip Off - Be Warned!

So, over my lunch break I go out to buy gift cards for a few people on my list whom I have no idea what they would like as a holiday gift. I thought it might be a good idea to buy some of those Visa/Amex/MasterCard GCs to give them a variety of places to use thier GCs.

Now, I've purchased many a GC at several places for presents. Never once have I had to fork over *more* than the car was worth. Not to mention that i could choose how much I put on the card.

It appears the almighty Credit Card Corporations aren't making enough money already from gouging consumers with their ridiculously high interest rates. They feel the need to *charge* for the ever so esteemed priviledge of using their gift cards as well.

I can understand the need to make a bit of money on these transactions, as the money is transfered from GC to the store.

BUT 4 FREAKING DOLLARS ON A $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE?!?!?

WTF?!?!

Am I missing something? Are the mighty corporations of Visa, Master Card, and Amex hurting this season? The gas prices a bit to high for them? Not enough people paying off their CC debt?

Learn from my mistake!! If you want to be kind and pick up a gift card for someone, go to Target, Best Buy, The Gap, etc. and buy the card from them. They seem to be fine just charging you for the amount of the card.

Jamie Leigh Jones was working in Iraq for a subsidiary of Halliburton when she was drugged and brutally gang-raped by several coworkers.

For the last two years, she's been asking the US government to hold the perpetrators accountable, but the men who raped her may never be brought to justice because Halliburton and other contractors in Iraq aren't subject to US or Iraqi laws.

Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant you're probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly one can get back their focus on what's important.

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab.

Here's what happened:

I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!

The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly.

So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”

And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck.”

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles
up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you.

When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did.

Stop Endless War in Iraq

President Bush is quietly negotiating an agreement with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to keep our troops there indefinitely--an agreement that could include permanent bases and a massive military presence for years.

Congress can stop the president from setting up permanent bases in Iraq and block an indefinite occupation--but it's not clear that they will. They need to feel a groundswell of pressure from voters immediately and loudly so they act on this quickly.

Tell Governor to Pardon German Shepherd

Congo, a German Shepherd, lives in Princeton, New Jersey. In June two gardeners came to his home and were asked to wait in their truck while the family penned the dogs up. The gardeners ignored the requests of the family. When they got out of the truck, Congo and the other dogs - like any friendly dog - came racing up to greet them. One gardener grabbed Congo's owner and put her between him and the dog. The other gardener grabbed a rake and hit one of Congo's puppies with it. Congo bit the man and he needed stitches. A judge in New Jersey has declared Congo "vicious" and is demanding he be put to sleep.

This is ridiculous. Congo responded appropriately. How would you respond if your family was attacked? The gardeners responded inappropriately. Congo's owners have brought in numerous "character witnesses" on Congo's behalf: the mailman, various delivery personnel and others who have worked at their home.

I'm asking you to send an email to Gov. Corzine of New Jersey and ask him to pardon Congo.

Three children have been hospitalized over the past 10 days after swallowing beads from Bindeez, named Australia's toy of the year at an industry function earlier this year. The beads in the toy, sold by Australia-based Moose Enterprises, are arranged into designs and fuse together when sprayed with water. Spin Master Ltd., a Toronto-based toy company that distributes a similar line of toys for Moose Enterprises under the name Aqua Dots, said it is requesting all stores remove the product from shelves in North America. It could not immediately be learned whether Aqua Dots are made in the same factories as the Bindeez product. But in a statement, Spin Master said that "out of an abundance of caution," it stopped shipping the item and was working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada. The news startled industry followers like Chris Byrne, a New York-based toy consultant, because Aqua Dots has been one of the few bright stars of the toy selling season, which, along with overall retailing, has gotten off to a sluggish start. So allow me to look at this a bit. First, I can't help but notice that they downplay the fact that bengees and aquadots are the same toy with a simple name change. Second, Mr. Byrne is a master at understatements. This could have been foreseen at a means of attack on our nation and as sabotage from inside a slave nation lashing out at anyone. Plus, lets not forget the simple thought that this might happen if you just don't check quality... But, GHB in kids toys? that is NOT a quality issue. That is an issue of overall bad trade policy, bad judgment by our leadership in dealing with people who are our enemies and giving them access to our most basic needs.

I am calling on anyone who has a brain and in sick of taking hit after hit to please repost this in your blog, post this in you bullitens and pass this info on to friends.

Then, Get on the phone and call your state local and fed leaders. We must take our voice back and get the trade deals tossed out, We must raise the tarrif back to its historic levels of 45% to 60%. This will sucure our nation from this kind of attack and bring our jobs back. Before 1973 our tarrifs never dropped below 25%... now they are 2.2%. all that money the government does not get they take from you by raising your personal taxes. we are loosing 500,000 jobs a year and loosing the strength of the US $$$!!!

so, get off your but and do something before the next hit kills a swath of people across this nation.

It's looks pretty clear that some kind of pollution credit system will be created soon to try to get a handle on the climate crisis. Polluting industries are trying to turn that legislation into a massive program of corporate subsidies. Their plan--giving away the credits for free to big polluters--punishes new companies and companies who got a jump on cleaning up their act.

But a full public auction makes sure that everyone plays fair by charging them equally to pollute and raises money to help pay for America's transition to the clean energy economy. Most of the Democratic presidential candidates have endorsed the public auction--which means industry is in a hurry to lock up the other system while we still have this President and this Congress.

I just signed a petition to ask our Congress to make sure any climate legislation has a public auction to sell pollution credits. Signing a petition may not feel like a lot. But it's a first step. And there's a lot at stake--$50 to $150 billion. Enough money to help all Americans transition to a clean energy economy. Our representatives need to hear clearly that we care about this issue.

Update on the Girls...

I'm sorry that I haven't posted anything in a while on this, it's because I'm seriously pissed off about this whole thing and every day that passes makes me more angry.

Jamie and Nancy have been processed out of the military and have gone back to their boyfriends in Germany. They will be coming back for the services whenever that ends up being.

Admiral Dad should be out of the service by now. He had been long-time sober but fell of the wagon during all of this. He's taking some time to get his head straight (therapy? rehab? who knows...) before he brings the remains back for internment.

Billy took last Monday off and drove out to Foster Mom's house in bfe to spend her day off with her and the family. He got to hear more stories of Shelly and actually met another long-time friend of the family who knew her. The waiting is killing him but he knows there's nothing he can do about it but be patient. I'm glad he took the time for a positive mental health break.

As for me, the more time that passes the less likely it becomes that I will be able to even be polite to Admiral Dad when I meet him. I think he's being a selfish ass about all this and I can't believe that he's putting everyone through this waiting just because he's having a meltdown. Hello, fucktard, there are lots of other people who need to get closure on this besides you. Apparently he doesn't care or can't care or whatever but I find it inexcusable and cannot understand the reason for the continued wait.

I promise to keep y'all posted as things happen...unfortunately there's been nothing to report. Please keep Billy, Foster Mom and the other girls in your thoughts and prayers. Y'all think happy thoughts that Admiral Dad pulls his head out of his ass long enough to remember there are others out here that are grieving and need a service so the healing process can continue.

A "revised" (revised like Puffy revised Kashmir) bill has been introduced as HR 3685, which would not stop discrimination based on gender identity.

Picture it! New Orleans, 2007! Update on the Girls and My Mental Status. :)

Good evening, all!

We heard from the group and I wanted to update everyone on the progress. Obviously they didn't make it back to town this week, but the bodies have been cremated, and the exit process is well underway for getting Jamie and Nancy discharged fully. Admiral Dad is processing out of the service right now as well.

Admiral Dad has been going through a very low spot which has kept communication at a minimum. That seems to be sorting itself out and I hope we'll have more timely updates that I can pass along to y'all.

We're hoping to see the group later this week and I'll keep everyone informed as the news comes through.

Thanks again for all your love and support for Billy through all of this. Please keep the good thoughts and love headed his way.

As for me, I actually had a terrific response from my last post and have been getting nurtured through the week. B is bouncing back from his own grief and is more able to be there to stand beside me. Extra special thanks to Kelly and Zaber this weekend, you guys are both wonderful and I appreciate all you do. Thanks in advance to Anna...I'm going to take you up on the offer to be covered in puppies!

Quick Update on the Girls...

Hello everyone! :)

Billy got word that the group made it back to DC this weekend, thank the gods they're finally back on American soil. Everyone is staying at Admiral Dad's townhouse and they're going to be organizing funeral arrangements and discharge paperwork on Nancy and Jamie starting this morning. We expect them to be arriving in the Metroplex later in the week with the dog and cat in tow. I'll keep everyone posted on memorial services and other details as I have them. Thanks again to everyone for keeping Billy and the rest of us in your thoughts and prayers during all of this!

In other news, I feel like I'm about emotionally maxed out and need a break. Anyone want to volunteer to take care of me for a little bit so I can fall apart and not have to feel responsible for anyone else's emotional health and well-being? Not that I expect anyone to want to actually do this for me but if there are any takers, please let me know. I'm hanging by a thread right now...

An Update on The Girls and Response to the Comment Thread...

I'm sorry I've been out of touch with the blog world but B's grandma passed and we had funereal duties to attend to. When it rains, it pours.

We finally got word that the girls' bodies should be back stateside today or tomorrow. It's still unknown if they're going to DC or to Texas, either way Billy's planning to attend the memorial. We're really hoping they come back here so everyone can go to the funeral especially the foster mom. There's no way she could get to DC right now. I'll keep everyone posted on the arrangements and the details on the memorial service as I know them.

In response to the comment thread on my previous post, I said:

"Billy is expecting for people to start calling and coming by the house. DO NOT bring negativity to him if you contact him directly, please. If he doesn't answer he's probably on the other line and will get back with you."

What you all have been going back and forth about for 28+ comments is exactly what I was referring to when I talked about negativity. I want that shit to stay away from Billy because regardless of everything else, he's grieving a loss and I don't want anyone to bother him with this crap. He doesn't need anything added to his plate right now.

Additionally, we're fairly intelligent human beings and have already questioned this scenario about a hundred times and still keep proving it to be true. There are just things that don't fit in at all with a scam. Let me list them for you:

1. They have never asked for money or anything easily resellable.

2. As of a couple of months ago when Billy pulled his credit last, there has been no identity theft.

3. We've met the foster mom and also cross referenced her phone number and listing and it matches perfectly.

4. The day B and I met the foster mom, she was completely devastated and talked about Shelly as if she were her own child. If she was acting, she deserved an academy award, I promise.

5. There has been a girl on the other end of that phone for 18 months now and I'm not the only person who talked to her besides Billy.

6. If the purpose was not money or identity theft then there's no apparent reason for this to have happened other than sheer meanness.

Obviously we still question things as they go along and we're all looking towards the memorial to see what happens with it. Still though, how many old guys do y'all know that were military in Vietnam and talk about all the subversive shit our country did that no one knew about until later? I know my dad has some pretty crazy sounding stories, and I have no reason to wonder if he's lying to me.

I think not questioning it is probably not a good thing in general, but we've all questioned it already and can't prove or figure out any type of scam with it. I believe it to be an unfortunate and real story at this time and will continue to do so until it is proven otherwise.

Bad News On the Girls sob

We found out late last night that the entire unit is confirmed dead. Here's a note from Billy that he posted as a myspace bulletin this morning...

Hello,

As most of you already know, I had a girlfriend deployed to Iraq. Shelly and her unit were due home this week for the end of their 18 month deployment and also because their enlistment ended this week. We received word late last week that something happened. Late last night we got confirmation from her father who is in Iraq also that the entire unit of four was killed. He was able to get a message to Shelly's foster mom.

Right now I have very little in the way of information. I know that they have recovered and identified the bodies. Her dad is supposed to contact me directly very soon once arrangements are made to get our girls home. We are expecting them to return to the states in the next 4-6 days.

I am writing this yet I really have no words. Please keep Shelly in your prayers and I will send out more information as I get it.

The escalation has been a failure. This was one of the bloodiest summers for US troops in Iraq, Iraqi casualties are running at twice the pace of last year and 15 of 18 of President Bush's own benchmarks remain unmet. But the White House is at it again--telling us that things in Iraq are going just great.

Congress is going to vote this month on war policy for the next year--and Bush is hoping all this "progress" talk will scare Congress away from voting for withdrawal. We can't let that happen. Almost 4,000 US troops have died. We've spent half a trillion dollars in Iraq. Every day you turn on the news and more people are killed.

Here's the bulletin that Billy just posted on myspace...

Hello,

I thought I had better take a second and update everyone on what is going on and what we know. First off, most of you know I had a girl in the Navy serving over in Iraq. Well, Shelly was due home in March, but her deployment was extended again. She was due home this week after serving 18 months deployment. In the infinite wisdom on the Navy, they decided to send them on one last assignment last Sunday literally one day before they were supposed to come home. I received word last Thursday that something happened to the unit. The entire unit was made up of childhood friends of Shelly's that all joined together on the same day. They were all due home this week and the end of their four year enlistment is tomorrow.

The unit was in Baghdad about to wire up a building. The unit was an EOD (bomb tech) unit. While they were inside the building, the building was struck with some type of artillery. They do not know what right now, but the Navy has started an investigation into what happened. They are still sifting through the rubble even know, but here is what we know as of last evening:

Chrissie was found and identified.
Cathy was found and identified
Jerry was found and identified. He was Shelly's shadow / bodyguard

We are waiting to hear information about:
Shelly. My girl
Jessie
Shelly's chief who was with her
Jack (Marine engaged to Chrissie)
Troy (Marine dating Cathy)

They are still trying to find everyone and identify them. The honest truth is we do not expect them to find anyone alive. Her camp commander (captain) was asking Shelly's foster mom yesterday for identifying jewelry to help with identifications. I will not give up complete hope until I hear more, but I am really just waiting to hear the confirmation.

As I get more information, I will send it out. Please do not call at the moment. I really do not have a voice. I also am trying to keep the phones clear as we try to find out more. Please keep Shelly, Jessie and the others in your thoughts and prayers.

Monday Update

Hello all. We do have an update and it's not good...here's the scoop.

I ended up going to FW yesterday with Billy and B to visit the foster mom and she was able to connect with the base via a ham radio operator.

1. More than half the team that was inside the building is now confirmed dead. Cathy and Chrissie along with their Marine fiancees are confirmed. Shelly (Billy's sweetie) and Jessie are still not confirmed. Questions were asked about what jewelry/tattoos/etc. for the other girls which makes us think there are unidentified bodies still there. It's definitely not looking hopeful at this point.

2. Admiral Dad has been removed from duty and will probably be retired. He was planning to retire when the girls' enlistment was up tomorrow anyway so that he could come home and begin having a father/daughter relationship with Shelly for the first time in their lives. :-(

3. We are requesting that the confirmed dead be brought back to this area for memorial services and internment so that we can all show support and say our farewells. I'll keep everyone apprised on that as soon as I know more.

Since Shelly is still not confirmed, Billy has requested to retain his space for now until we hear something concrete. If you feel like you need to get a hold of him, please text message, email, or myspace him so that it's not too invasive on his privacy. He's planning to do a myspace bulletin of his own today fyi, and I'll repost it here as soon as it's out.

In completely other news, B's grandmother is probably not going to make it through the week. We went to the hospital yesterday afternoon while we were in 817 to see the family and for him to say his goodbyes. I don't think he really wants direct contact on this subject but if you'll please keep he and his family in your thoughts I'd appreciate it.

I guess funerals are about to be the order of the day in the next few weeks...at least I'm a Goth girl and have plenty of black outfits to choose from. ;-)

Here's the update on the girls...

We're still hearing rumors and bits of information about the girls in Iraq but here's what we know so far...

1. Billy's girl's dad who is an admiral tried for weeks to keep them from having to go on this mission but was unable to stop it. Apparently it was based on "bad intelligence"... (WTF???)

2. Admiral Dad was on the mission with them when everything went down and here's what happened. They went into a building and the building caught a direct hit. Dad immediately snapped off, ran over and started digging through the rubble with his bare hands. He had to be sedated and we haven't heard anything from him since.

3. Billy's girl's phone got left at camp and apparently the cook has possession of it. We've been trying to call and text it for days but haven't gotten anyone to respond yet.

4. Billy's girl's former foster mom has been trying to reach the camp and did get through once but there was no reception and they couldn't hear each other. She's continuing to try and also get someone to pick up the other phone that we know works over there.

As for Billy, I inflicted myself on him and stayed the night over there last night in spite of his protests that he was "fine". When I found out that he hadn't eaten for a couple of days, I overrode his freedom to care for himself and made him eat and distracted him with tales of our friends and other fluffy things that have nothing to do with war or Iraq. He got a good night's sleep and seemed much better this morning. B is heading to FW this afternoon with him to visit the foster mom...

I'm still on "Billy watch" until we hear something one way or the other and have already warned him that he should go ahead and plan to have a house full of people once we hear something. Thanks again to everyone for sending their love, support and prayers for this. I'll keep y'all posted as things happen.

I know I've blogged about the group of girls we know who are over in Iraq fighting. They are due to come home this week because their enlistment is up so the military (in its infinite wisdom) decided to send them on one last patrol before they headed back stateside. We got word that they got hit last night and are hurt but we don't have any more details than that. Please please, whatever deity you pray to, send out lots of prayers for their return home alive. I know it's been ages since I've actually made a personal post and it's because I've been swamped and overwhelmed with moving, birthday, and work changes. If they approve President Bush's nomination of Judge Leslie Southwick to the Federal bench, they'll give tremendous power to a man who once helped remove a woman's 8-year-old biological child from her custody in part because the mother was a lesbian.

It seems Congress on Saturday night gave President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales more unchecked power to wiretap Americans without a warrant. Yes, that's the same Attorney General who is currently mired in scandal and probably committed perjury on this very issue.

Enough is enough. There is no trade-off between fundamental liberties and security. I figure preserving our Constitution is essential to our security—we can't lead on freedom around the world when we're actively undermining the rule of law at home.

Required Reading for all Restaurant-Goers!

I know entirely too many people who work in the service industry not to repost this. Take care of your servers, people, they work really hard for their money!

****************************************************************************************

The next time you're out eating at a restaurant, look at your server. Do you think they are really happy to be doing that job? The answer is not really, but its what we do, and we do it for the money so please help them out. Its a tougher job than you think and you should pay them accordingly!

There are SO many people out there flooding the restaurants w/o any knowledge of how to tip. Here is a short guide for the general public to follow. Feel free to print out and store in your wallet and/or purse.

1. CHILDREN "THE LITTLE DEVILS":
If you have children, DO NOT let them, open and dump anything on the table (ie; salt, sugar, etc). IF YOU DO, you must leave an extra $5 for the server to clean up YOUR CHILD'S mess & to restock the now unusable wasted items. Don't get mad if you ask for crackers and your server tells you they're out when you just saw another table eating crackers with their soup -- can you blame them for not wanting to clean up the mess afterward? We are neither their babysitter nor their parent. The least you can do is pay us for the extra work. Also make sure you control your kids and don't let them scream or run around the restaurant. It's very distracting not to mention dangerous if they get ran over by a server with hot food in their hands.

2. "THE CAMPERS":
If you feel the necessity to stay for longer than 15 minutes after you pay, its an extra $3 every 30 minutes. We make our money from the tables. If you are in one and we can't seat it, we don't make money.

3. COMPLIMENTS:
Telling a server they are the best server they've ever had is not a tip. If we are good, let us know by leaving us more money. We cant pay our bills on compliments. Its not that we don't appreciate the praise, its just that if you say that and then leave 10% it's an insult.

4. THE SALVATION PAMPHLETS:
Prayer cards and any other religious pamphlet is NOT a tip. It is insulting that you assume we are w/o religion and must save us. Again, like ..4, we cant pay bills w/prayer cards. We'd go to church on Sundays if it wasn't mandatory to work on Sundays because EVERYONE who goes to church follows it by eating out. Also don't try to preach to us while we are working. We don't go to your work and put you down so don't do it to us.

5. TIPPING:
It is not 1960. Cost of living has gone up dramatically since then. 18% is the MINIMUM amount of what you should be tipping your servers. Remember, that steak is $12.99 not $22.99 because restaurants aren't required to pay minimum wage in most states! ($2.13 in New Jersey!) We are taxed on 10 percent of your meal automatically anyway, not to mention we have to tip out a percentage of our sales - your bill - to the food runners, bartenders, and bussers. So if you don't leave a tip, WE END UP PAYING FOR YOUR MEAL!! So move that decimal one spot left and multiply by 2 and your server will never be disappointed. ($25 = $2.50 x 2 = $5)

6. THE COMPLAINERS:
If you get a discount because of your food was prepared wrong or something, do not take it out of our tip. We didn't cook it. The cooks get paid hourly regardless if the food sucks. However, we only make what you give us. And don't ever leave a percentage on the total after the discount or comp -- always tip on what the total would have been.

7. THE LATE ONES:
If you come into the restaurant 10 mins before closing or any time near closing hurry up and order your food and get out. Closed means closed, not social hour. It is so rude to sit there and take your sweet ass time. We can't leave until you leave because we have to do sidework and clean the table you are sitting at. We don't want to stand there waiting for you for an extra hour just because you don't want to go home. We recommend 24 hour establishments such as Dennys if you wish to sit into the wee hours of the night.

8. THE TABLE HOGGERS:
If you only come in for coffee or a dessert, to do paper work, or to have a meeting, don't sit there taking up our booths for hours. We are not Starbucks or a hotel restaurant. If you want to sit for hours, go there or else you better leave a good tip for us and camping fee included.

9. THE GREET:
When we come up to the table to greet you and we ask how you are doing please let us know. We honestly want to know how you are doing. If you are in a bad mood we want to know that from the beginning. A confused stare or complete silence does not suffice as a reply to "How are you doing?". Also don't interrupt our greeting and say "I want coffee", "can we get some bread, or "what are the soups?"

10. THOSE DAMN CELL PHONES:
Don't ever talk on your cell phone in a restaurant. This is probably the rudest thing to do. If you must be on your cell, at least keep your voice down in respect for other customers. If you are on your cell phone when we walk up to greet your table we will walk away until you get off your phone. Just show some respect and give us your attention for a couple of minutes.

11. TAKE-AWAY OR TO GOS:
Always remember to tip the take-out order servers! They work just as hard as a server, and hardly ever get tips for it! WE DESERVE TO BE TIPPED TOO!

Although its proponents claim that liquid coal is a cure-all to our nation's energy problems, the truth is that liquid coal is plagued with economical and environmental downsides from the time coal is mined until long after the liquid is burned.

Liquid coal releases almost double the global warming emissions per gallon as regular gasoline, making a hybrid filled with liquid coal as dirty as a Hummer H3 running on regular gas.

Liquid coal also requires huge amounts of water, and would lead to an over 40% increase in coal mining just to replace a mere 10% of our nation's transportation fuels. Proponents of liquid coal also want the government to funnel billions in subsidies and tax breaks to artificially create an entirely new industry. Liquid coal is arguably the dirtiest, most expensive energy gamble we could take.

I just realized that I forgot to blog about this and that's just not right. :-(

As of today I'm the new part time front desk, set up, and processor for a credit repair company. I got the gig through a friend of a friend and it should be the perfect thing since they know I'm still going to be doing real estate so I don't have to hide it. I'll be working Mon-Wed-Fri from 9a-5p and it's not much money but it'll be enough to cover our new rent which is a huge weight off my mind. Also, there's definitely something to be said for having a mindless job that I can do in my sleep.

Hopefully Zip will just get over themselves and realize that I can't live on no money and sometimes people have to do what they need to do and I'll be all set. The company policy is that you're not supposed to work for anyone but them, but I think that's fucked up when they don't pay me any kind of base. I'm not ready to move my license yet because I have too many other things on my plate right now but I also don't want it to go inactive either.

Wow, a lame day job, what a novel idea! ;-)

I had some seriously fun events this weekend and I gotta share.

Friday night Lil Bro took me to see Spam A Lot at Dallas Summer Musicals as an early birthday present. Oh my gawd, it was too funny! The first half wasn't as good as the second in my opinion because it was mostly just snippets of the Holy Grail and I've seen that movie SO many times that I was quoting along with the show. The second half absolutely made up for it and then some. I highly recommend seeing this show if you have the chance.

Saturday while B worked I got to spend the entire day reconnecting with Da Jules and hanging out with her. We went to the lake for Karla's 30th birthday event and chilled in the sun (yes, it's a miracle the sun actually came out...). We went and visited B at work and then the three of us went down to Ellum and saw a gallery opening at Kettle Art. We adjourned to the bars after and one of Da Jules new friends met up with us and hung out for the rest of the evening.

Yesterday while Billy and B were seeing Transformers I went up to Lewisville and got to meet a friend's entire family who are all in town for a week. What a great bunch of people! :)

Last night was the icing on the cake...a friend had an extra ticket to the Poison and Ratt show and he picked me to join him, WOOHOO! The crowd was fucking odd to me, it was like most of the old hair band fans turned yuppie and forgot how to dress. There was the strangest mix of old and young people at the show too. Still though I got to relive my youth and hear the old songs that I never got to hear live back in the day. Joel rocks my lame ass for giving that to me!
